Hemp, botanical name Cannabis Sativa, is a herbaceous plant native to Central Asia and sacred to Hindus, of the Cannabaceae family. It germinates in spring, blooms in late summer and pollination takes place by means of transport by the wind.
It is a cultivation with a very low environmental impact, it needs little water and no herbicides to grow strong and luxuriant.
Cannabis contains a variety of different compounds called Cannabinoids: the best known ones are certainly Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD). THC induces psychoactive effects unlike CBD, which offers great benefits to the human body. For this reason, in recent years the CBD molecule has been much studied in the medical field and has not gone unnoticed even in the cosmetic field, where it is finding many applications.
In cosmetics it can be found in different forms:
-Hemp oil (Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil): is a vegetable oil obtained by cold pressing of the seeds. It has a truly optimal ratio (1:3) between the two most important fatty acids, Omega 3 and Omega 6, which gives the oil anti-inflammatory and regenerating properties. It has antioxidant properties thanks to the presence of vitamins E, A, B1 and B2 and protective properties thanks to the high content of Omega 3, Omega 6 and gamma linoleic acid. The latter compounds are responsible for maintaining proper hydration and correct hydrolipidic balance. Hemp oil is also rich in iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus. In cosmetics it is highly appreciated for its soothing and anti-reddening action in dry and irritated skin and is useful for helping to combat desquamation, dehydration and keratinization disorders. Its regenerating and antioxidant action on tissues also make it an ally in preventing and fighting the signs of aging.
-Hemp extract (Cannabis Sativa Seed Extract, Cannabis Sativa Leaf Extract). The hemp extract generates a progressive retarding and elasticizing effect, thus guaranteeing a beneficial effect that progresses with the duration of the treatment, it is therefore excellent for combating dry and chapped skin or for mature skin that shows the first signs of aging, moreover it has a good absorbent power. Also in this case, the presence of vitamin E has an antioxidant action, which is important for counteracting the formation of free radicals and the signs of skin aging. In the cosmetic field it is mainly used as an emollient and conditioner.
Ethical chain
The hemp contained in our cosmetics comes from the Allegro con Bio farm in Petriolo (MC). The young owner Emanuele Testatonda, after a degree in biology, converted the company that belonged to his grandparents to organic farming in 2010. In its 30 hectares it has chosen to cultivate native and endangered varieties and in 2015, also thanks to the meeting with La Saponaria, it decided to start cultivating hemp on a hectare and a half, thus recovering traces of a supply chain now almost forgotten in Italy. Our collaboration with Emanuele's farm has therefore contributed to reviving the Italian hemp supply chain, thus supporting the biodiversity of our country.
