Menthol is a solid compound which at room temperature is presented in the form of transparent hexagonal crystals.

It is a component of Mint essential oil (30-35%) and is extracted from the latter.

Its use is very ancient and is appreciated for its refreshing properties, in fact it acts on the receptors of the skin that perceive the cold, thus giving a refreshing and relief sensation, even in case of itching.

The inhalations of the vapors developed by placing a few drops of alcoholic solution of menthol in boiling water are famous for their ability to relieve bronchial disorders and nasal congestions; in fact, menthol has expectorant and disinfectant properties.
