Shea butter is a natural substance extracted from the seeds of an African tree also called Butyrospermun Parkii in honor of its discoverer Mungo Park, a Scottish explorer of the late eighteenth century, who in one of his many trips along the Niger river discovered properties and uses that the local indigenous peoples made it.
The Shea tree grows wild in Central Africa, it is an imposing tree up to 10-15 meters tall with dark green leaves clustered at the end of the branches. Its fruits resemble plums and contain one or two stones inside them.
African populations have used Shea butter since ancient times, so much so that the tree is called the "tree of health and youth" precisely because of the beneficial properties of its nuts, from which a buttery substance is obtained. Raw Shea butter is yellowish in color and has a sweetish odor.
For cosmetic use, this particular butter is found on the market without any impurities and deodorized, in fact it is obtained by squeezing organic shea seeds and then deodorized by mechanical methods, using filters without the use of chemicals.
Rich in vitamins A, B, E and F, shea butter is an excellent anti-aging. It prevents the signs of aging thanks to the presence of unsaponifiable substances that stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, making the skin on the face and décolleté more elastic and toned. It is used in many cosmetics precisely for its moisturizing and softening properties, it keeps the skin in good condition and counteracts the signs of cellular aging due to its action against free radicals and against external agents such as wind and cold.
Furthermore, it can be a precious ally in case of skin redness, irritation, sunburn and burns thanks to its known soothing and healing properties. For this reason it is used to protect the delicate skin of babies from possible damage caused by the diaper.
In pregnancy, it helps prevent and reduce stretch marks localized on the abdomen and breasts, as well as soothes cracks in the breasts during breastfeeding. Once spread on the skin, Shea butter is quickly absorbed without leaving that unpleasant greasy feeling.
In the trichological field, on a cosmetic level, it is excellent as a conditioner for dry and stressed hair to make it softer, or on the scalp in case of dryness and irritation.
It can also be used instead of the hairspray to fix the curls, or to replace the fixing wax on short hair.
