Triethyl Citrate is the triester of citric acid with ethyl alcohol. It comes in the form of an odorless and colorless oily liquid, soluble in oil and alcohol and insoluble in water. It inhibits the formation of bad odors caused by the degradation, by the bacterial flora residing on the skin, of the eccrine and apocrine sweat components into short-chain free fatty acids. Triethyl Citrate is attacked by bacteria instead of natural sebum and hydrolyses into ethyl alcohol and citric acid. Ethyl alcohol has a bacteriostatic action while citric acid, by lowering the pH of the treated area, prevents the formation of capric, caprinic, caprylic and butyric fatty acids, characterized by a musky and pungent odor.
